Cult Horror of the 1980s (archive)

Tuesdays in October at 7:00pm at the Movie Madness Miniplex

Cost: $75 ($60 members) for the four-class series

The 1980s were arguably the most genre-expanding decade in horror history. Films came out at a record pace from studios large and small, driven by technological advances and the growing popularity of the genre. In this course, we’ll take a look at some cult classics of the 1980s and how, in their own special ways, each moved the needle further in the evolution of horror as a genre. The films we’ll consider include a slumber party slasher; a superbly bloody coming of age tale; a thriller based on the ancient tale of Oedipus; and a B-movie inspired by B-movies.

For a complete list of titles that will be shown in this course, email education@moviemadness.org with “film titles” in the subject line.

Movies will be screened at the Movie Madness Miniplex, followed by an instructor-led discussion. Classes will begin on October 4 and be held Tuesdays through October at 7:00pm. Proof of vaccination is required for all students and instructors.

Tuition is $75 for the four-week class, $60 for Hollywood Theatre/Movie Madness members. Class size will be limited to 18.

This class will be taught by Kia Anne Geraths, a filmmaker and educator. Her previous MMU classes include International Cult Horror of the 1970s, Women in Documentary Filmmaking, and more.
