Oregon Nikkei Endowment is proud to present the Portland
debut of
Hidden Legacy: Japanese
Traditional Arts in the World War II Internment Camps
.
Through historical footage and
interviews with artists, this documentary film tells the story of how
traditional Japanese cultural arts were maintained at a time when over 120,000
persons of Japanese ancestry, over two-thirds of whom were American citizens,
were forcibly removed
from their homes on the West Coast and incarcerated in America’s
internment camps. For this one-day-only event, the screen and stage will come
alive with a concert by master koto player
Shirley Kazuyo Muramato-Wong
and a Japanese classical
dance performance by the Sahomi Tachibana Dancers. Attendees will be also able
to participate in a question and answer session with the filmmaker and artists.
All
proceeds will go directly to support programs at the Oregon Nikkei Legacy
Center,
a Japanese American history museum located in Old
Town/Chinatown.
