MMU: Revenge of the Flop: Sci-Fi B Movies & The People Who Made Them

In this class, we’ll be taking a look at some of the most absurd and outrageous science fiction B movies ever made. We’ll explore how the young filmmakers behind some of these flops would go to not only find success, but to define the genre itself. Films such as STAR WARS, THE TERMINATOR, GREMLINS, and AVATAR might have turned out very differently (or not existed at all!) if it weren’t for these B movie jumping off points.

(We aren’t allowed to promote the names of our education titles online, but feel free to email education@moviemadness.org with “B movie class titles” in the subject line for a full list of titles.)

Movies will be screened at the Movie Madness Miniplex (4320 SE Belmont), followed by an instructor-led discussion. Classes will be held Tuesdays in January at 7:00pm. Proof of vaccination and masks are required for all students and instructors.

“I really liked having somewhere to go every week to watch a movie with other movie nerds and talk about it afterwards. The topic is what drew me in, but the community was what I loved most!” - Happy MMU student

Tuition is $75 for the four-week class, $60 for Hollywood Theatre and Movie Madness Members. Class size will be limited to 18.

This class will be taught by Kia Anne Geraths, a filmmaker and educator. Her previous MMU classes include International Cult Horror of the 1970s, Women in Documentary Filmmaking, and more.
