Organ Grinders presents 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

At the Hollywood Theatre, the Organ Grinders silent film series has been on hiatus.

On March 21st, the triumphant return of the series welcomes Boston band BENT KNEE back to score and perform their third movie for the series. This powerful sextet storms the stage with a delicate power that has an astonishing range. The darkness and desperation flows like wine from this band and hearing them is not something to do while multitasking.

In a special one-time performance, the Hollywood Theatre is transformed back to its vaudeville days of bowler hat bedecked musicians and big screen spectacles.

Combining orchestral textures, haunting vocals, experimental sounds, and an astonishing dynamic range, Bent Knee has been reviewed as "a theatrical and imaginative group that puts on a great spread (Mass Mic)." Their songs morph rapidly and unpredictably between fragile passages that are "dark, mysterious… and dare I say beautiful? (Olive Music)", to walls of sound with "a shrieking and wailing banshee, stadium-sized guitar heroics, and pounding rhythmic tides (Ryan's Smashing Life)." An immersive journey and an intimate conversation all at once, the group "sends expectations reeling (Cover Me)", and is "perfect for everybody, from the girls jamming out in their cards to the freshmen doing heroin in their dorms (Left Over Chinese Food)."

ORGAN GRINDERS - From under the screen, the sounds of modern groups are paired with movies from a different era, updating the genre of Silent Film accompaniment to the sounds around us today. Organ Grinders revisits the original vision of the Hollywood Theatre, built in 1926 with an orchestra pit and a hydraulically ascending theatre organ.

20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA - Based on the legendary 1870 Jules Verne novel, features groundbreaking underwater photography for the era. A giant sea creature rampaging the seas rams the very vessel sent to investigate it. A clandestine rescue reveals wonders of the deep kingdom underwater. At the same time, a Union army balloon is marooned on a mysterious island where the officers find a wild girl living alone on the island. A dark story of revenge is all that remains.
