Starring Lon Chaney and Mary Philbin! A disfigured former composer (Chaney) haunts the Paris Opera House, where he falls in love with young understudy Christine Daae. The masked phantom lures Christine into his subterranean world below Paris and professes his love. But when she removes his mask, she is horrified by his grotesque appearance and begs to be released. In exchange for her release, he makes her promise to stay away from her lover, the Vicomte Raoul de Chagny. When Christine defies him and turns to Raoul for protection, the outraged phantom—whom the police have determined is an insane criminal, an escapee from Devil’s Island—kidnaps Christine off the stage during a performance of “Faust.” With help from the secret police, Raoul must enter the phantom’s underground lair to rescue her.

A forerunner of the American horror film and one of the most lavish productions of the silent cinema, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has inspired countless remakes and imitations. But none of its successors can rival the mesmerizing blend of romance and mystery that haunts every frame of the original. We’re proud to present the 1929 theatrical version, restored from archival 35mm elements by Film Preservation Associates.

Presented in partnership with the Columbia River Theatre Organ Society. Featuring live organ accompaniment by organist Martin Ellis!
