Philip Guston: Talk & Screening
Monday, August 24 at 7:30pm | $5 |
Dig into the life and work of Philip Guston and explore larger concerns related to creativity and art-making with a drummer on a decade-long quest to understand and learn from one of the great artists of the 20th century. Featuring rare documentary footage from the last year of Guston’s life.
Drummer Neal Morgan will give a talk on Philip Guston, the American painter whose all-over abstract canvases made him a household name in the 1950s and whose rejection of abstraction and return to figurative allegorical work in the late 60s shocked the art world and made him one of the most influential visual artists of his generation.
Presented by the Portland Museum of Modern Art and The Hollywood Theatre, the program will be 90 minutes in length and will include a slide show, video screening, and discussion.
This is the first installment of the Accessible Art History series, a public program organized by the Portland Museum of Modern Art (PMOMA). PMOMA is excited to launch this new educational program, intended as a resource for artists and art appreciators to expand their contextual knowledge. For each installment, PMOMA asks important makers and collaborators in the art world to give a presentation about a historical artist whose work has been influential in their own practice. Through this series, audiences have a chance to learn about some lesser-known chapters of art history in an informal, fun atmosphere. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
This is Morgan’s fourth consecutive year presenting Philip Guston talks in Portland, always around the artist’s birthday. The first talk was given on a blanket outside now-closed bar Tiga in 2012, with five lectures on the west coast in June 2013 and a PMOMA lecture in 2014
