About Dave & Loki: Dave Shinsel manages the Intel® GPA tools. Prior to starting up the GPA Tools team, he managed the Intel team that worked onsite with Apple to develop and optimize their graphics driver for the Intel GMA 3100. At four feet tall and 75 pounds, Loki is an interactive robot. He responds to commands, has conversations, and even tells jokes.
About the film: Number 5, one of a group of experimental military robots, undergoes a sudden transformation after being struck by lightning. He develops self-awareness, consciousness, and a fear of the reprogramming that awaits him back at the factory. With the help of a young woman, Number 5 tries to evade capture and convince his creator that he has truly become alive.
Science on Screen is a popular nationwide program funded by the Coolidge Corner Theatre Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to expand film and scientific literacy. This ongoing series will creatively pair screenings of classic, cult films, and documentaries with lively presentations by notable science and technology experts. Each film is used as a jumping-off point for the speaker to introduce current research or technological advances in a manner that engages popular culture audiences.
