The Holdovers with Mark Orton

Portland based composer Mark Orton will be on hand with a live ensemble to perform selections from his new score for THE HOLDOVERS, and to share details about the film-composing process for this second project with director Alexander Payne (after 2013’s NEBRASKA). THE HOLDOVERS soundtrack was recorded here in Portland and features a who’s who of amazing local musicians.

“The use of holiday-themed songs and Mark Orton’s lovely score, which feels plucked directly from a decades-old movie, add to the atmosphere, placing the audience right back in the past.” ~ Next Best Picture

Mark Orton, founding member of the genre-bending acoustic chamber ensemble TIN HAT TRIO, has written original scores and contributed music to over 75 dramatic and documentary films including NEBRASKA, MY OLD LADY, EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED, SWEET LAND, BUCK, THE GOOD GIRL, THE BOX TROLLS, PEOPLE-PLACES-THINGS, 12 MIGHTY ORPHANS, Fernando Meirelles’ 360, Ken Burns’ THE ROOSEVELTS series, and Pixar’s LOOP. Recent projects include the films LEAVE NO TRACE and SOMEWHERE IN QUEENS, along with two series from Netflix – Barack Obama’s WORKING: WHAT WE DO ALL DAY, and Jared Hess’ MUSCLES & MAYHEM: AN UNAUTHORIZED STORY OF AMERICAN GLADIATORS.

From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, THE HOLDOVERS follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them -- a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) -- and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).
