Iconic Queer Ancestors: Lynn Shelton

Four-week class held Wednesdays in August at 6:30pm, starting August 2, in the Movie Madness Miniplex. Cost: $75 ($60 members).

Lynn Shelton began writing her first feature film at age 39, and quickly proved to be a uniquely queer voice in the mumblecore genre. Shelton’s comedic dramas offer subtle explorations of sticky emotional situations, everyday sexuality, and life in Seattle and the PNW. With her sudden passing in 2020 at age 54 of undiagnosed acute myeloid leukemia, her life and creative contributions ended much too soon. In this class, we have the distinct honor and privilege of being a small part of how her legacy as a queer femme cinema ancestor is held and shaped. We’ll trace her earliest works to her final completed film, her turn to television directing with GLOW and Little Fires Everywhere and her budding creative and romantic partnership with comedian and actor Marc Maron, and the impact she made in the industry, beloved by all who crossed her path.
